바람도 깃발도 아니고

원문

六祖因風颺剎幡，有二僧對論。一云幡動，一云風動。往復曾未契理。祖云：不是風動，不是幡動，仁者心動。二僧悚然。
바람에 깃발이 나부끼는데 두 스님이 다투었습니다. 한 사람은 "깃발이 움직인다" 하고, 한 사람은 "바람이 움직인다" 하며 오가도 이치에 닿지 못했습니다. 육조 스님이 말했습니다. "바람이 움직이는 것도 아니고, 깃발이 움직이는 것도 아니다. 그대들 마음이 움직이는 것이다." 두 스님이 흠칫 놀랐습니다.

쉬운 풀이

바람인가, 깃발인가. 둘 다 그럴듯해서 다툼은 끝나지 않습니다.

육조 스님은 심판을 보는 대신, 다투는 두 사람이 서 있는 자리를 통째로 돌려세웁니다. 지금 움직이고 있는 것은 — 그대들의 마음이라고.

옳고 그름을 가리느라 바쁜 날, 정작 나부끼고 있는 것은 무엇일까요. 깃발을 잠재울 수는 없어도, 이 물음 앞에서는 잠시 고요해집니다.

오늘의 명상

오늘 시비를 가리고 싶어지는 순간,
바깥의 깃발 대신 나부끼는 이 마음을 한 번 봅니다.
바람 탓도, 깃발 탓도 잠시 내려놓고.

The wind was flapping a temple flag, and two monks were arguing: one said the flag moved, the other said the wind moved. Back and forth, they never touched the truth. The Sixth Patriarch said, "It is not the wind that moves; it is not the flag that moves; it is your mind that moves." The two monks were struck with awe. — The Gateless Gate, Case 29

Wind or flag? Both sound plausible, so the argument never ends. Instead of refereeing, the Sixth Patriarch turns the whole ground the two are standing on: what is moving right now is your mind. On days busy with judging right and wrong, what is it, really, that is fluttering? We cannot still every flag — but before this question, things grow quiet for a moment.

The moment you itch to settle a dispute today, look once at this fluttering mind instead of the flag outside. Set down, for a while, both the blame on the wind and the blame on the flag.
