After awakening, keep watch: when deluded thoughts arise, do not follow them; lessen and lessen again, until you arrive at effortlessness... This is the ox-herding practice of all good teachers after awakening. — Jinul, Secrets on Cultivating the Mind
The moment of "I see!" is not the end, Jinul says. What follows is the time of tending the ox. A newly tamed ox slips into the neighbor's field whenever it can. The herder does not rage — he draws the rope and brings it back, daily, slowly, until one day no rope is needed. A practice of lessening, not accumulating. Knowing once is not the finish; returning a hundred times is nothing to be ashamed of. Jinul named that slow road "ox-herding" — and named himself the Ox-herder.
However many times the mind wanders into another's field today, draw the rope without anger. Lessen, and lessen again — at an ox's unhurried pace.
