趙州因僧問：某甲乍入叢林，乞師指示。州云：喫粥了也未？僧云：喫粥了也。州云：洗鉢盂去。其僧有省。
한 스님이 조주 스님께 여쭈었습니다. "제가 갓 들어왔습니다. 가르침을 주십시오." "죽은 먹었는가?" "먹었습니다." "그럼 발우나 씻게." 그 스님이 문득 깨친 바가 있었습니다.

쉬운 풀이

특별한 가르침을 기다리던 스님에게 조주 스님은 아침 설거지를 가리킵니다.

농담이 아닙니다. 도(道)가 죽 먹고 발우 씻는 일 바깥에 따로 있다면, 그것은 어디에 있는 것일까요.

거창한 것을 찾는 동안, 손안의 일은 늘 시시해 보입니다. 그런데 그 시시한 일 하나를 온전히 하는 것 — 거기서 그 스님은 무언가를 보았습니다. 무엇을 보았을까요.

오늘의 명상

오늘 아침 밥그릇을 씻을 때, 그 일 하나만 해 봅니다.
물소리, 그릇의 매끈함, 손끝의 온기.
다른 데를 찾지 않는 손이, 이미 도착해 있습니다.

A monk said to Zhaozhou, "I have just entered the monastery. Please instruct me." Zhaozhou asked, "Have you eaten your rice porridge?" "I have." "Then go wash your bowl." At that, the monk understood. — The Gateless Gate, Case 7

To a monk waiting for something special, Zhaozhou points at the morning dishes. This is no joke: if the Way existed apart from eating porridge and washing bowls, where would it be? While we search for something grand, the task in our hands looks trivial. Yet doing that one trivial thing completely — there the monk saw something. What did he see?

Washing your bowl this morning, do just that one thing. The sound of water, the smoothness of the bowl, the warmth at your fingertips. A hand that seeks nowhere else has already arrived.
