English
Zhaozhou asked, "What is the Way?" Nanquan said, "Ordinary mind is the Way." … Wumen's verse: "Spring has its flowers, autumn its moon; summer its cool wind, winter its snow. If no idle matter hangs on your mind, this is the best season of your life." — The Gateless Gate, Case 19 (T48 No.2005, verified against CBETA)
When young Zhaozhou asked his teacher Nanquan about the Way, the answer was almost disappointingly plain: not some special mind — the ordinary one. Yet at this one line Zhaozhou greatly awakened. Wumen's verse carries the news through the four seasons: flowers, moon, wind, snow — the seasons were always already good; only one idle worry hanging on the mind kept us from seeing it. No need to travel far for the Way — take down that one hanging thing, and now is the good season. Quietly raise the words "ordinary mind is the Way." Set down the wish to become special, and for one breath simply look at this plain mind that was always here.
