English
"Empty-handed we come, empty-handed we go — this is the housekeeping of our house." — Cheongheo Hyujeong, Mirror of the Seon School (X63 No.1255, verified against CBETA)
"Housekeeping" usually means what we've stored up, but Cheongheo's household runs the other way: coming empty-handed and going empty-handed is the practitioner's entire fortune. This is no lament of having nothing. Since nothing was ever grasped, nothing can be lost; with nothing to lose, there is nothing to fear — that is its abundance. Wolchang-geosa's Introduction to Seon Studies, read alongside, points to this same unburdened place. We may not set down all we clutch today, but we can remember, for a moment, the plenty of empty hands. Gently open both hands. Looking at the empty palms holding nothing, feel for one breath that this lightness is your original household.
