왜 '한 마음'이라 하는가 — 性自神解

원문

何為一心 謂染淨諸法其性無二
真妄二門不得有異 故名為一
此無二處 諸法中實 不同虛空 性自神解 故名為心
무엇을 한 마음(一心)이라 하는가? 물든 법과 맑은 법이 그 성품이 둘이 아니요, 참됨과 거짓의 두 문도 다를 수 없으니, 그래서 '하나(一)'라 한다. 이 둘 없는 자리는 온갖 법 가운데 실다워서, 텅 빈 허공과는 같지 않고 성품이 스스로 신령히 아니, 그래서 '마음(心)'이라 한다.

앞서 한 마음에 두 문이 있다는 것을 보았지요. 오늘은 원효 스님이 스스로 묻고 답합니다. 도대체 왜 '한 마음'이라 부르는가. 답은 두 글자에 나누어 들어 있어요. 좋은 마음과 나쁜 마음, 맑은 날과 흐린 날이 알고 보면 성품이 둘이 아니라서 '하나(一)'. 그리고 그 자리가 텅 빈 허공 같은 게 아니라 스스로 신령하게 알고 있어서 '마음(心)'.

그러니 내 안의 어두운 부분을 도려내야 하나가 되는 게 아닙니다. 이미 둘이 아니에요. 그리고 그 하나는 멍한 공백이 아니라, 지금 이 글을 읽으며 환히 알고 있는 바로 이것입니다.

오늘의 명상

오늘 마음에 좋은 생각이 오면 '하나', 미운 생각이 와도 '하나'라고 가만히 속삭여 봅니다. 나누어 밀어내지 말고, 둘 다 한 마음의 일렁임임을 한 호흡 지켜보세요.

"What is the one mind? The defiled and the pure are not two in nature, and the gates of true and deluded cannot differ — hence 'one.' This place without two is real amid all things; unlike empty space, its nature knows of itself, spirit-like — hence 'mind.'" — Wonhyo, Commentary on the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith

We have seen that the one mind has two gates. Today Wonhyo asks and answers for himself: why call it "one mind" at all? The answer sits in the two characters. Good mind and bad mind, clear days and clouded days, are not two in their nature — hence "one." And that place is no blank void: it knows of itself, spirit-like — hence "mind." So you do not become whole by cutting out the dark parts; they were never two. And that oneness is not a daze — it is this very knowing, brightly reading these words right now.

Today, when a kind thought comes, whisper "one"; when a resentful one comes, "one" as well. Don't split and push away — watch, for one breath, both as ripples of a single mind.
