The great way has no gate; a thousand different paths lead to it. Pass through this barrier and you walk alone between heaven and earth.
The book is called the Gateless Barrier. It sounds like a contradiction: if there is no gate, how can there be a barrier? Wumen puts that contradiction in his very first line on purpose.
"No gate" means there is no special qualification, no secret technique for entering. There are paths everywhere. And precisely because there is no gate it is hard — there is no handle to push. We are always looking for a handle: the right posture, the right breathing, the right teacher. The moment you let the handle go is the moment you pass through.
"Walking alone" does not mean lonely. It means standing on your own feet, leaning on no one's words. If, while holding your huatou today, the wish to ask someone who knows the answer arises — let even that wish sit with you.
Today's meditation: "Why did he say 'No'?" Don't look for an answer — hold only the question for fifteen minutes. Leaving it unresolved is today's practice.
