The burning cares of this world are like a house on fire. How can we bear to linger inside, quietly accepting so long a suffering? To leave the cycle, nothing surpasses seeking the Buddha. And if you would seek the Buddha — the Buddha is this very mind. Why search for the mind far away? It has never left this body.
So begins Secrets on Cultivating the Mind. The house is on fire, yet we settle down inside it. Worry, anger, restlessness burn us daily — and strangely, we are so used to the heat that we never think of leaving.
Then where do we go? Jinul's answer is unexpectedly near: the way out is not far away. The Buddha does not live only in the shrine hall — the Buddha is this very mind. The further away you search, the further you drift. The mind that knows "this is hot," that knows "this hurts" — it is already standing at the door.
This dawn, there is nowhere far to go. Just sit, and let the feet that have been searching finally rest.
Sitting quietly, ask: what is it that knows this heat — and where is it, right now?
