[먼데이 선명상] 지금 만나는 자리가 그대로 — 천태 『마하지관』

圓頓者 初緣實相 造境即中 無不眞實

원돈(圓頓)이란, 처음부터 실상(實相)을 반연하여, 어떤 경계에 이르든 그대로 중도(中道)여서 진실 아님이 없는 것이다.

The perfect-and-sudden way takes reality itself as its object from the very first step: whatever situation you meet is itself the middle way — nothing is outside the truth.

수행이라고 하면 우리는 어딘가 특별한 자리를 떠올립니다. 조용한 산사, 방해받지 않는 새벽. 그런 자리가 도움이 되는 것은 사실입니다. 그런데 천태 스님은 첫 문장부터 다르게 말합니다. 진실은 저 멀리 있는 목적지가 아니라, 지금 내가 만나고 있는 바로 이 자리에 이미 와 있다고요.

We imagine practice needs a special place — a quiet temple, an undisturbed dawn. Helpful, yes. But Zhiyi says from his first line: truth is not a faraway destination. It is already here, in the very situation you are meeting now.

설거지 물소리, 마음에 안 드는 말 한마디, 지루한 오후. 이런 것들은 수행을 방해하는 장애물이 아니라, 그 하나하나가 진실이 드러나는 문이라는 것입니다. 피하지 않고 바로 보면, 어느 경계든 중도 아닌 것이 없습니다.

The sound of dishwater, an unwelcome remark, a dull afternoon — not obstacles to practice, but each a door where truth shows itself. Met directly, no circumstance falls outside the middle way.
