Alas, beings — forever troubled by the five desires, yet never ceasing to chase them. These desires grow fiercer the more they are fed, like scratching an itch by holding it to a fire.
Scratching an itch feels good for a moment — and makes it itch more. Nāgārjuna says the pleasures we chase work the same way: sweet the instant we get them, thirstier the moment after.
This is not a command to crush desire. It is an invitation to notice: What am I chasing right now — and does getting it truly bring rest? The Treatise tells this story as the first preparation for sitting.
Today, when a craving rises, pause and ask: is this water that quenches — or fire held to an itch?
