English
"There is one thing here: from the very beginning bright and spirit-like, never born and never dying, that cannot be named or depicted." — Cheongheo Hyujeong, opening of Mirror of the Seon School
This is the famous first line that opens the Mirror of the Seon School. "One thing" — Cheongheo's name for the original mind within us. He calls it a "thing," but it's nothing you can hold. From the beginning bright and spirit-like, never born and never dying, beyond any name or shape. "Cannot be named" sounds baffling — but turned around, it means something not caged by names or forms is already within you. No need today to figure out what that "one thing" is. Just glimpse the bright place before a name, before a thought arises. Wolchang-geosa's Introduction to Seon Studies, read alongside, points to this same doorway. Quietly glimpse the single instant just before a thought arises, when no name has been attached. Don't try to figure it out — leave that pre-name brightness, as it is, for one breath.
