한 마음에 두 문이 — 一心二門

依一心法有二種門。云何為二？一者心眞如門，二者心生滅門。

한 마음의 법에 두 가지 문이 있다. 무엇이 둘인가? 하나는 마음의 참된 그대로인 문(心眞如門)이요, 둘은 마음이 일어나고 사라지는 문(心生滅門)이다.

쉬운 풀이

지난주 '생각을 여의면 경계도 없다'를 보았다면, 오늘은 그 한 마음에 왜 두 얼굴이 있는지를 봅니다. 원효 스님이 풀이한 『기신론』은 말합니다. 한 마음에 두 문이 있다고. 하나는 본래 그대로 고요한 문(진여문), 하나는 출렁이며 일어났다 사라지는 문(생멸문).

중요한 건 이 둘이 서로 다른 두 마음이 아니라는 거예요. 파도가 아무리 쳐도 물은 하나이듯, 출렁이는 이 마음과 본래 고요한 마음이 둘이 아닙니다. 그러니 출렁임을 없애야 고요가 오는 게 아니라, 출렁이는 그 자리가 이미 고요한 물이에요.

오늘의 명상

마음이 지금 출렁이고 있다면, 그것을 가라앉히려 하지 마세요. 파도 아래 잠긴 고요한 물을 떠올리며, 출렁임과 고요가 한 물임을 한 호흡 느껴 봅니다.

Last week: free of deluded thought, no realm remains. Today, why that one mind wears two faces. The Awakening of Faith, as Wonhyo explains it, says the one mind has two gates — one still and just-as-it-is (suchness), one surging up and passing away (arising-and-ceasing). The key: these aren't two different minds. As water is one however the waves crash, this surging mind and the originally still mind are not two. So stillness doesn't come by erasing the surging; the very place of surging is already still water. If your mind is surging now, don't try to calm it. Picture the still water beneath the waves, and feel for one breath that surge and stillness are one water.
