English

"The clarity and stillness of śamatha-vipaśyanā (stopping and seeing) was not heard of in former ages." — Zhiyi, opening of The Great Treatise on Śamatha-Vipaśyanā

The Mohe Zhiguan opens with this single line: the clarity and stillness of stopping and seeing is so remarkable it was unheard of in earlier ages. Yet this remarkable thing is not far away. Stopping is the mind resting for a moment; seeing is watching clearly within that rest. The two aren't separate — they arise in one place. When a noisy mind pauses, that very place brightens and grows still on its own. Nothing grand to learn anew; just pausing once, right now — clarity and stillness are already inside it. Stop what you're doing for a moment and simply take one breath. Is the paused place dark or bright, noisy or still? Don't judge — just watch quietly for one breath.
