“Holding fast to the Name — for one day, two days… up to seven days — with one mind undistracted.” — The Amitābha Sūtra, the root teaching gathered into Deokjin’s Jeongto Gamju (H0288)
The past two weeks we sat with Deokjin’s self-preface verse and the “Four Alternatives”; today we return to their root, the Amitābha Sūtra. The heart of recitation isn’t complicated — one mind, undistracted. That’s all. “One day, two days… seven days” isn’t about filling time; it means that even briefly, for that moment, the mind gathers wholly into one sound. This is why Heoju Deokjin, though a Seon master, urged recitation: the “one mind” of holding a hwadu and the “one mind” of calling the Buddha’s name are not two different things. And dedication (廻向): this week’s small gathering, not kept for oneself, but quietly turned toward one person nearby. Breathing slowly, call “Namu Amitābha” three times. Feel the sound gathering into one place rather than scattering. At the last, gently send this stillness to one person who comes to mind.
