화두를 품는 마음 — 如猫捕鼠, 如鷄抱卵

千疑萬疑，只是一疑。如猫捕鼠，如鷄抱卵。

천 가지 의심, 만 가지 의심이 다만 하나의 의심이다. 고양이가 쥐를 잡듯, 닭이 알을 품듯.

닭이 알을 품듯, 지금 숨 하나를 가만히 품어 봅니다. 잡으려 조이지도, 놓아 잊지도 말고, 그저 품은 채 한 호흡 머무세요.

Today’s line is the Mirror’s famous image for how to hold a hwadu: however many the doubts seem, they are only one doubt — held like a cat stalking a mouse, like a hen brooding her egg: not letting go, yet not straining either. Like a hen brooding her egg, gently hold one breath now. Don’t grip it tight, don’t let it drift — just hold it, and rest there one breath.
