"To have Seon and also the Pure Land is like a tiger with horns." — "Four Alternatives" (traditionally attributed to Yongming Yanshou; its earliest extant source is Tianru Weize's Questions on the Pure Land, Yuan dynasty). The current of Seon–Pure Land union that Deokjin's Jeongto Gamju carries on.
Behind Master Heoju Deokjin's (1815–1888) encouragement of recitation lies an old teaching traditionally ascribed to the Song master Yongming Yanshou (the verse itself first appears in later Pure Land literature): to be equipped with both Seon and the Pure Land is as formidable as a tiger with horns. Seon is the power to see one's mind directly; recitation gathers that mind into a single sound. Deokjin saw the two not as rivals but as mutual support. So recitation is no "lower step"—it adds horns to the tiger of Seon's clarity. Then dedication: turning this week's small practice toward one person beside you. Breathing slowly, call "Namu Amitābha" three times, gathering the mind into that one sound while clearly watching the "I" who calls. At the last, send this stillness to one person who comes to mind.
